Classic vs Volume vs Mega Volume: Which Lash Technique Should You Learn First?

Morgan McGrath

Every lash artist starts somewhere, but deciding which technique to learn first can feel overwhelming.

Here’s a breakdown from Ida Jane Lashes, Arizona Board-Approved Educator with 12 years of experience.

Classic Lash Extensions (Your Foundation)

Classic lashes use one extension per natural lash, creating a clean, natural look.
Perfect for beginners, Classic training teaches isolation, lash placement, and adhesive control.

You’ll master:

  • Eye safety and lash integrity

  • Lash mapping and styling

  • Retention basics

Start here if you’re new to lashing or want to build a strong foundation before advanced work.

Volume Lash Extensions (Your Next Level)

Volume lashes use hand-made fans of 2–6 extensions per natural lash, creating a fluffy, full effect.
You’ll learn:

  • Proper fan creation and symmetry

  • Lightweight application to avoid damage

  • Styling for density and shape

Volume training is ideal once you feel confident with Classic techniques.

Mega Volume Lash Extensions (The Advanced Art)

Mega Volume fans use 7–16 ultra-thin lashes per natural lash, for dramatic density and texture.
This technique requires excellent control and understanding of lash health.

When done correctly, Mega Volume creates show-stopping results while keeping natural lashes healthy.
